Russian President Wladimir Putin On Friday Moscow said it had successfully mediated a conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan after recent clashes between the two neighbors left more than 200 people dead.
What happened: Putin said that despite its ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the country has enough resources to negotiate a deal between Ukraine soviet republics — Armenia and Azerbaijan — after recent hostilities escalated into the worst confrontation between the neighbors since a 2020 war.
“Under the influence of Russia, this conflict was localized. I hope it stays that way,” Putin told media outlets after a regional summit in Uzbekistan to Reuters reported.
Asked whether Russia has the resources to maintain its influence in the region given Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine, Putin said: “As you can see, there are enough.”
Even though Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s president told Putin the conflict had “stabilized,” the Armenian parliament speaker said Alen Simonyan said on national television: “Obviously we are very dissatisfied. Our expectations were not justified.”
“We expect more concrete steps from our Russian partners, not just statements or half-words,” he added.
Meanwhile, on Friday US House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed that she would visit Armenia to show their support amid new conflicts with its neighbor. “Tomorrow we will visit Armenia because we have received an ongoing invitation from the Armenians,” she said while speaking at a group of seven (G7) countries meet in Berlin.
