While expressing worry over the high incidence of HIV/AIDS in the province, Sindh Assembly Opposition Leader Haleem Adil Sheikh urged fully functioning screening facilities at the grassroots level to address the grave situation.
On Wednesday, the opposition leader addressed the matter in a letter to the Sindh chief secretary and health secretary. He said that HIV/AIDS was expanding throughout the province owing to a lack of patient screening, and that a significant number of untreated people were transmitting the illness. He stated that it was impossible to determine the actual number of affected persons.
Sheikh, citing media reports on the appalling HIV/AIDS condition in the province, highlighted the growing number of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B and C infections in Sindh. According to data provided by the Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA), 24,088 people were contaminated with one or more infectious illnesses and were deemed unsuitable for blood donation after their samples were examined at blood banks in 24 districts during the first 8 months of 2021.
HIV infection was found in 1,282 persons in Karachi, and it was steadily growing in Larkana, where over 5,000 HIV infections, including children and pregnant women, were recorded.
HIV/AIDS cases have also been documented in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Sanghar, Thatta, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, and other districts of the Province, according to him. Haleem noticed that the Sindh AIDS Control Program had failed to adequately screen Ratodero, despite the fact that one of the primary reasons for the development of AIDS was a lack of screening facilities and concealment of the disease by infected people.
He said that the Sindh government had failed to take adequate precautions to avoid the outbreak of dangerous illnesses. The opposition leader went on to say that this was despite health professionals across the province repeatedly emphasising the importance of screening for HIV/AIDS and other spreading illnesses.
