Why US Big Tech support anti-climate-change lobbying groups Guardian Reports

Dallas, TX, United States, 10/06/2021 / Dallas News Desk /

The largest corporations in the United States are supporting business organisations that are opposing major climate legislation. According to the Guardian, Amazon, Disney, Apple, and Microsoft are among the firms that are backing these enterprises despite their pledges to combat climate change.

The Democrats’ planned $3.5 trillion budget plan intends to put measures in place to reduce planet-warming emissions. However, corporate lobbying groups and organisations have come together to fight the bill’s approval, despite the fact that the Democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, has called the bill “the most significant climate action in the country’s history.”

Many large US corporate entities have revealed goals to reduce carbon emissions, such as Jeff Bezos, one of the world’s richest people, who has deemed the climate crisis to be “the greatest threat to our planet,” while his company Amazon has made an obligation for companies to reduce their carbon footprint to net zero by 2040. Microsoft has likewise pledged to be “carbon negative,” while Disney intends to utilise exclusively renewable energy. However, these same organisations are actively backing lobbying groups who are attempting to oppose the same bill. One of the greatest legislative attempts to address the climate problem and prevent the earth from becoming inhabitable is threatening Joe Biden’s ambitious objectives.

According to Kyle Herrig, president of the watchdog group Accountable.US, “Major corporations love to tell us how committed they are to addressing the climate crisis and building a sustainable future, but behind closed doors, they are funding the very industry trade groups fighting tooth and nail to stop the biggest climate change bill ever.”

When approached by the Guardian, the corporations pushing for the cause did not condemn the lobbying groups, nor did they say they would reconsider their ties to these organisations. According to Herrig, “Hiding behind these shady groups doesn’t just put our environment at risk – it puts these companies’ household names and reputations in serious jeopardy.” Furthermore, leaders from Microsoft, Intuit, United Airlines, and Deloitte have pledged to “do everything we can to prevent this tax-raising, job-killing reconciliation bill from becoming law.”

These same corporations, however, have voiced worry about global warming and have made several commitments to reduce emissions previously.

Another group of large corporate leaders, including Apple’s Tim Cook, Amazon’s Andy Jassy, and Alphabet’s Sundar Picharai, have raised significant worry about the plan, which will impose high tax for the rich. The Pharmaceuticals Research and Manufacturers of America, a trade association comprised of Bayer and AstraZeneca, has also launched advertisements against the measure. Lobby organisations like Disney, FedEx, Verizon, Johnson&Johnson, Dow, and Goodyear have been consistently working to derail the proposal.

The president, Joe Biden, wants every Senate Democrat to endorse the bill in order for it to be passed; however, senators such as Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia who gets large funding from the fossil fuel sector, has already stated the bill “makes no sense.” The first major attempt at climate legislation appears to be on the verge of collapse, inflicting political damage on Biden and impeding efforts to persuade other governments to take swift action at the forthcoming UN Climate Talks.
