As of now, South Sudan is left with 59,000 doses whereas, Malawi has 16,400 doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca Vaccine, and all of them are past their expiry date, which was 13 April.

Both countries have decided to destroy their consignment, which was donated via the African Union. Despite the request of WHO to keep them until they find a way to extend the expiry dates, the countries are not willing to keep the vaccines in store.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo says that they cannot use most of the vaccines from 1.7 million of Oxford-AstraZeneca dose, which was received for the poorer countries under the Global Covax Scheme.
By the end of April, only 1000 doses of vaccine have been administered, and most of the batch is being sent to Ghana and Togo with an expiry date of 24 June.
Why are vaccines not being used?
Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine can be safely stored in cool temperatures till six months after the production date. African Union is redistributing these batches, which were originally given to South Africa in February with the Expiration date of 13 April.
The South African Government has decided not to use them, worrying that these will not offer sufficient protection from the coronavirus variant prevalent in countries.
What is the reason for the delays in using vaccines?
Most of the South African countries failed to do adequate preparation before receiving vaccines. Africa Centres For Disease Control confirmed that countries need more support to raise the number of health workers and get necessary supplies like protective equipment.
Countries that have vaccines in store that are close to expiry date are asked to contact Africa CDC or WHO.
Along with weak health services, another major problem that African countries are facing is poor transport networks. This slows down the delivery of vaccines to remote areas of the country.
Why the vaccine hesitancy?
Some politicians and politicians are blaming the concerns over the efficacy and safety of vaccines for the slow uptake in African countries. It is getting difficult to quantify the impact of these concerns.
Health minister Austin Demby said that it took a lot of time to convince people about the efficacy of vaccines.
Malawi virologist says the mistrust around vaccines has also played a role in the country’s unstable supplies of a vaccine. Also, the decision to stop using vaccines in South Africa was due to blood clots cases around the world.
The government is making all the efforts; however, the general public is not as receptive.
On average, about 20 percent of people interviewed said they would not get vaccinated.
