Fans reduce SID risk

SID or the sudden infant death syndrome is one of the worst nightmares of a parent. A study published in the Archives of pediatrics and Adolescent medicine throws light on the factors responsible for this. Surprisingly, putting a fan it seems works wonders for the safety of the kids. The senior author De Kun Li is a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist at the division of research at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California. He was talking about the research and the findings and said, “What we found in this study is that if an infant had a fan that was used in the sleeping room, the infant’s risk of SIDS was reduced by 72 percent compared to no fan in the room.”

He was talking to Health day and said that putting a fan in the children’s room would be a good idea. Most infants die due to an excess of carbon dioxide, which might get trapped in the airway. This can result due to many reasons. A very simple thing like a baby sleeping on its stomach can cause asphyxiation. Even too soft bedding may result in the air getting trapped in the airway. Using a pacifier to put a baby to sleep is extremely dangerous. A study was conducted to ascertain the cause of SID syndrome. A study of 185 babies with SID was conducted. Their conditions were compared with 312 other babies who were selected at random. It was found that the only difference was that there was ample ventilation and a fan in some cases the windows were open and this helped to reduce the risk of SID considerably.
