Alaska Sees Trouble for Salmon, Crabs from Climate Change

EINNEWS, December 2—The new Republican congressional majority said today it would close down the House Climate Change Committee, just as representatives of the world’s governments were gathering in Cancun in another attempt to reach a common strategy for minimizing global warming’s impact.

But while the politicians dither, scientists and commercial interests are forging ahead with plans to adapt to wrenching new climatic conditions.

In Alaska, which is heavily dependent on its salmon and crab fisheries, the state’s Department of Fish and Game released a report entitled simply “Climate Change Strategy,” which foresees increasing threats from predatory fish stocks moving into northern waters and other dangers.

The report forecasts that altered stream flows, changes in water quality, ocean acidification, and other changing conditions will greatly affect existing stocks.

The report will be presented to Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell’s climate change subcabinet, which was formed in 2007 to advise the governor on the preparation and implementation of an integrated climate change strategy for the state.
