Kim Jong Un attended Tuesday’s opening ceremony of a new massive greenhouse farm built on a former North Korean air base where the country used to test several missiles until last year.
What happened: Kim launched the Monday Ryonpho greenhouse farmlocated east of Hamju to mark the anniversary of the founding of the ruling Labor Party.
Kim’s ruling party unveiled the project to transform the former Ryonpho Air Force Base into a “highly automated farm,” described as a “top-priority task” and a model for rural civilization to achieve Kim’s goal of improving people’s lives.
North Korea has previously used the country for several short-range ballistic missiles, including the KN-25 in November 2019 and the suspected KN-23 in March 2021.
According to Kim, the party plans to “promote the country’s overall rural development in a more dynamic and confident manner, using the Ryonpho Greenhouse Farm as a model.”
The development came days after Kim was at the helm North Korea’s nuclear tactical exercises against US allies. Kim said North Korea’s recent barrage of missile launches was a “serious warning” in response to joint naval exercises conducted by South Korea and the US vowed to “hit and obliterate” potential South Korean and US targets..
