On Saturday, May 7th, a Twitter profile called @WholeMarsBlog shared a post about Japan’s population decline.
In response to the tweet, Tesla chairman Elon Musk replied, expressing concern about the declining birth rate and rising mortality rate.
At the risk of stating the obvious, if nothing changes that causes the birth rate to exceed the death rate, Japan will eventually cease to exist. That would be a great loss to the world.

@WholeMarsBlog cited a report noting that Japan’s population had its largest population decline on record, falling by 644,000 to just over 125.5 million in 2021.
The decline was the largest since comparable data became available in the 1950s.

I’m talking about not having children at all. That’s the problem.

“I’ve spent a lot of time talking about the birth rate thing,” Musk added. “This may be the greatest threat to the future of human civilization.”
