Sony’s PlayStation 5 is already notoriously hard to find, and on Thursday the maker of the popular console said it will also become more expensive for gamers in many parts of the world.
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has recommended increasing the console’s retail price in Europe, the UK, Japan, China, Australia, Mexico and Canada, the company’s top official Jim Ryan said.
US consumers would be spared the hikes, Ryan said, without giving any further explanation.
The price increases mean that a PS5 Digital Edition will be available in Europe for €449.99 (US$450), up from €399.99.
The same console will retail in the UK for £389.99 (US$462) instead of £359.99 and in Japan for 49,478 yen (US$363) instead of 43,978 yen.
SIE blamed “high global inflation rates and unfavorable currency trends” for the price increases.
“Due to these difficult economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the PlayStation 5’s suggested retail price in select markets,” Ryan said in a statement.
Addressing a supply shortage that has made it difficult to buy PS5s is Sony’s current top priority, he said.
