A million people eager to dabble in a new artificial intelligence tool that lets them create images simply by describing them with words will soon have their wish granted, the creators said on Wednesday.
Artificial intelligence research company OpenAI is conducting a wide beta test of DALL-E, a cutting-edge software that creates images from text descriptions.
Although the arrival of AI has raised fears that machines will replace humans in fields ranging from customer support to journalism, enthusiasts see the technology as an opportunity rather than a threat.
A video showcasing the tool on the company’s website showed how DALL-E generated an image of a polar bear playing a guitar, a photo of a koala dunking a basketball, and the famous Mona Lisa painting, but with the subject who wore a mohawk hairstyle.
“We’ve already seen people use DALL·E to create music videos for young cancer patients, create magazine covers, and bring novel concepts to life,” the company said in a post.
According to OpenAI, invites will be sent out to a million people on a waitlist in the coming weeks to try the latest version of the tool.
Amid fears that this and similar tools could be misused in disinformation campaigns, OpenAI said it has been working with researchers and developers to build in safeguards to curb abuses like DALL-E for deception.
“We reject image uploads with realistic faces and attempts to create the likeness of public figures, including celebrities and prominent political figures,” Open AI said.
Built-in filters in DALL-E block violent, political, sexual or other content blocked by its policies, and the system is designed to avoid assumptions about race or gender, Open AI said.
