New insulin pumps, CGM, and smart pens offer many options for people with diabetes.
According to specialists, enhancements in insulin pens, blood pressure monitors, and insulin pumps are a gateway to comprehensive and more advanced diabetes technology. Health care professionals, doctors, and medical consultants are taking help from the real-time data available through the latest technology as well as from the advanced new generation medical diabetes devices.
We can take HbA1c as an example that helps people having diabetes according to Diana Isaacs (PharmD, BCPS, BC-ADM, CDCES, FADCES, FCCP), a clinical pharmacy specialist and CGM program coordinator in the department of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at the Cleveland Clinic Diabetes Center, and Dhiren Patel (PharmD, CDECS, BC-ADM, BCACP), an adjunct associate professor of pharmacy practice at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston and an endocrine clinical pharmacy specialist at Cardiometabolic Concierge Clinic, who spoke about the latest in diabetes technology at the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists virtual conference.
“New insulin pumps, CGM, and smart pens offer many options for people with diabetes,” Isaacs said. “The new technology is making it easier to monitor glucose, give insulin, and track data.”
According to Isaacs and Patel, the launch of such diabetes devices will prove to be a game-changer as it will assist in managing diabetes through insulin and caps in the near time. Patel further explains that suppliers, most of the time, find it difficult to predict whether the dose is improper or not as they would be trying to get the most accurate data for insulin dose. They see this task difficult as they wouldn’t be using any new technology smart devices. With the usage of the latest connected insulin pens, this gap can be overcome as it calculates the doses accurately by measuring glucose levels. The device will also help prevent the missed doses by sending reminders to the recipients for the upcoming dates for their subsequent doses.
“Connected pens are something a lot of people can take advantage of but don’t know about,” Isaacs told Healio. “That’s going to be a game-changer for people with daily injections of insulin because historically, we have not been able to see any data with that. We have no idea what doses people are taking or when they are taking them. This is an area that’s going to explode.”

“With CGM, we’re continuing to see accuracy improve as well as cost,” Isaacs told Healio. “Hopefully, the cost is going to continue to come down as the Dexcom G7 is going to be disposable. We already know the FreeStyle Libre is the lowest cost, and that’s disposable. Hopefully, that’s going to bring more CGMs to more people.”
For a better experience of insulin management, the next generation of hybrid-closed loop devices is something now medical professionals are looking up to. Beta Bionics iLet is a new diabetes technological smart system in the pipeline that can store 160 units of insulin. In contrast, the Tidepool loop is an automated insulin dose application that can also be a game-changer for diabetes technology.
