Patrick Kettner Developer Advocate Google Explains How to Make A First Impression By Improving First Input Delay

FID is usually measured in milliseconds and is an important metric to measure if you want to improve the user experience of the site.

Dallas, TX, United States, 09/29/2021

One never gets a second chance to make a first impression and this is also true for webmasters who can make or break their business with the first impression that they make on the mind of a website visitor when the visitor visits the site for the first time. Improving your first input delay will help you greatly in making a good first impression on your website visitors.

Improving your first input delay is crucial for a great page experience. First input delay measures how long it takes your site to react when a first-time visitor interacts with it. FID measures the delay in data processing once a user has clicked on a button or has interacted with your site in any other way. FID is usually measured in milliseconds and is an important metric to measure if you want to improve the user experience of the site.

How to find your FID Score

FID scores come from the monthly chrome user experience report and measure what real users are experiencing when they interact with your site. You can check your FID score inside the core web vitals section of the Google Search Console or can also measure using your own analytics tools.

You can also quickly check how your pages are performing with the PageSpeed Insights tool. This tool is a hosted online version of the same tool that is available as a part of the Chrome dev tools. It will show you how your pages are performing in a test environment that has been configured around the connection speed and device performance that are considered average for today’s web users. Your URL needs to be online for more than a month in order to be included in the Chrome user experience report.

What is a good FID Score?

There is no such thing as a pass or fail FID score as the scores are themselves used to measure relative performance between different URLs. A good goal is to aim for 75% of your website visitors having a first input delay of fewer than 100 milliseconds.

100 milliseconds has long been considered as an inflection point with users considering any delay less than 100 milliseconds as the website performs instantaneously. Anything between 100 and 300 milliseconds is problematic and means that your website users have to face delays when interacting with the site.

A delay of more than 300 milliseconds is a noticeable significant delay and will cause a worse experience for your website visitors.

It’s important to note that FID scores only measure the delay in interactions and it’s possible for a page not to have any FID score if the page does not have any interactions or buttons on it.
