I commend California lawmakers for enacting this piece of legislation, as it further protects employees’ privacy in the workplace, says Eric Grover, a Los Angeles employment attorney. It’s an infringement for employers to request that workers provide their account information so they can review their private personal social media pages. Employees should always be able to enjoy some level of privacy, especially if they have chosen to keep certain things private on their social media pages.

This bill prohibits an employer from requiring or requesting an employee or applicant for employment to disclose a user name or password for the purpose of accessing personal social media, to access personal social media in the presence of the employer, or to divulge any personal social media.
