New California laws aimed at banning religious bias

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill that will battle religious discrimination in the workplace, reports Eric Grover, a Los Angles employment lawyer.

The Workplace Religious Freedom Act ensures that all workers have equal protection in the workplace, by recognizing that religious clothing like turbans, hijabs and yarmulkes are true expressions of faith. “This is a step in the right direction to ensure that employees of all religions will be able to work and honor their religion regardless of company dress codes, says Eric Grover, a Los Angeles employment lawyer.

The Workplace Religious Freedom Act, A.B. 1964 sponsored by Assembly Member Mariko Yamada, D-Davis, strengthens existing law by clarifying that wearing religious clothing or a religious hairstyle as a belief or observance is covered by protections under the state’s Fair Employment and Housing Act.
