Trenton, NJ – An internal affairs investigation was opened after a Trenton man claimed he was arrested for trying to help a woman who was being assaulted in broad daylight, as reported by NJ.com. The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office is conducting a review of several city police officers’ actions in regards to the event.
Prosecutors could potentially recommend criminal charges for the officers or send the case back to the Trenton police department for disciplinary action, according to a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office.
Rob Chilson, 37, filed an internal affairs complaint after he was arrested on May 2, 2010. According to Chilson’s report, he was attempting to scare off a man who was beating his ex-wife on a city street. Chilson claims he was tackled and cuffed as he was trying to give his contact information to police.
The woman involved in the assault, Brenda Jiminez, was also arrested. Her ex-husband, the man who was caught on tape beating her, claimed she slapped him. Her ex, Jose Cotto, was not charged.
Chilson explained, “There’s something really backwards about this case…If I wasn’t involved in it, I wouldn’t believe it.”
Internal Affairs is conducting their investigation through interviewing witnesses and reviewing video from a nearby bar that captured the incident.
Chilson claims he is not seeking criminal charges for the police officers. He stated he simply wants to see justice for the May 2 incident, explaining, “The only person I really want to see criminal charges against is the man who was beating that woman.”
Chilson alleges the officers who responded to the situation on the corner of Ashmore Avenue and Washington Street did not properly investigate what was going on before making arrests.
