Passengers of Delta Air Lines traveling on the frequent-flier miles will be charged for checking of their first baggage. However, they will not be charged the fuel surcharge according to a statement issued from Delta, one of the biggest carriers of the nation on Wednesday.
Almost all major airlines except Delta, which merged with the Northwest Airlines last week, have started charging the first bag fee. According to Delta, this fee was charged as per the ongoing policy of Northwest which was already charging fee to check baggage before the merger.
The Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President from Delta, Stephen Gorman said widely accepted and proven practices from both Northwest and Delta were being adopted by the airline.
Shares of Delta traded at $11.14 dropping by 14 cents. Passengers traveling on this airline within America will have to pay $15 for first baggage check and $2 for the second. This practice will be put into practice from 5th of December affecting all passengers traveling on discounted tickets in the economy class.
According to Delta, those who have already purchased tickets for travel on or after 5th December will pay the old rate of $50 for the second bag and one bag will be checked for free as per Delta’s old system.
Business class and first class passengers will however not be charged anything for checking three bags. Similarly, the full coach fare passengers and international flight passengers will get two free bag checks and will be charged from the third bag.
