Fire fighters are doubly prone to cancer according to recent studies the firefighter cancer Support system says the number of cancer detection amongst firefighters has increased in the last 10 years. It has been found that there are many factors which contribute to this increasing incidence of cancer.
The firefighters are exposed to dangerous chemicals while they fight the fires. Even the extinguished fires have remnants of dangerous chemicals, which can cause cancer. Initially the firefighters would plunge into a situation without the now mandatory masks and protective gear. There were 2 reasons for this, ignorance and a desire to appear ‘macho’. A study was conducted in Phoenix after afire and it was found that even after the fire was put out there were unacceptable amounts of carbon monoxide, formaldehyde or sulfur dioxide. Another hazard is that the firefighting trucks are often too near the firehouses. The released aromatic hydrocarbs including benzene harmed the firefighters
Apart from this they are exposed to asbestos too when they come into contact with old buildings and structures. This harmful for the lungs and the body. Soot also settles on the equipment and can be inhaled.
Firefighting units now insist on regular cleaning of equipment and also wearing of protection even after the fire is put out. The firehouses and the trucks are distanced to ensure safety for firefighters.
