According to a study conducted by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, a person who suffers from non melanoma skin cancer is twice prone to the risk of various other cancers like breast cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer as compared to a normal person. An extensive research was conducted on 769 people afflicted with non melanoma skin cancer and 18,405 normal, healthy people to arrive at this conclusion.
According to the study which conducted over a period spanning 16 long years, 293.5 people out of 10,000 with a history of skin cancer developed other cancers. Healthy individuals who were afflicted with cancer numbered 77.8 out of 10,000. According to this study, age also plays a role. The younger the person suffering from Skin Cancer, more chances and risk of contracting other types of cancer as compared to older people.
According to Adam Voiland there are at least eight ways to spot and arrest skin cancer before it becomes fatal. Reasons for predominance of skin cancer more among men as compared to women is also explained by him.
According to Alberg skin cancer afflicted people are probably more vulnerable to other cancers as their DNA is already weak and is unable to repair damaged cells. He hypothesizes that if a person’s ability to repair DNA caused by sunlight is below optimum, he or she is exposed to a greater risk of skin cancer.
