Japanese Video Game Industry Players Tightening Belts

Sega, Konami, Tecmo Koei reportedly scaling back

July 12, 2010 – – Some of Japan’s biggest video game publishers are reportedly scaling back their efforts in order to beef up the bottom line, according to Nikkei.com. The site says Sega, Konami, and Tecmo Koei will all curb their offerings this next year.

Sega will release about 15% fewer games this year and cut research and development costs, according to the report. The maker of Sonic the Hedgehog earlier confirmed it will not attend Gamescom, one of Europe’s biggest video game expos. The company also cut staff in April.

Despite publishing one of the more critically lauded video game series, Metal Gear Solid, Konami will cut back its new releases by 10% to improve the quality of its titles to boost profitability.

Tecmo Koei is looking to boost its profits 6-fold by cutting out 11 titles.
