“Consider cooking a ham, pot roast, pork shoulder, ribs, or other holiday meat to add your own twist to this year’s Thanksgiving dinner,” says registered nutritionist John “Wesley” McWhorter, a national spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics based in Houston, Texas.
As the cost of fresh vegetables increases, canned or frozen vegetables will give you more bang for your buck.
“Take a bag of frozen field peas and frozen pearl onions to throw in the microwave for a quick side dish,” says McWhorter. “Microwave them for four minutes, add some oil, herbs like thyme, sage and rosemary, and sprinkle with a little salt and pepper before serving.”
“Add more vegetables to your menu this year by incorporating legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains to ensure your meal has an adequate amount of plant-based protein,” he says.
