Dolton, IL – A freshman honor roll student was killed by a stray bullet while walking home from school on Monday, May 25, 2010, as reported by ABC news.
Destin Hernandez was 15-years-old and a student at Thornridge High School in Dolton.
The shooting happened near Silby and Oak, at an intersection where students regularly head to after school for food. Destin was shot while crossing through the parking lot of Baba’s Steak and Lemonade.
Police reported two groups of young people who were aiming for each other are responsible for the bullets. Investigators have spoken with witnesses and are reviewing security tapes from the fast food restaurants that are nearby.
The police stated they believe they know who fired the shots; but no arrests were made as of Tuesday, May 25.
Grief counselors were made available to Thornridge students Tuesday morning.
The former principal of the school, Michael Winston, told reporters, “When [it’s] a student like this, who is striving to make something of himself, it is a tragedy.”
Hernandez has been described as not only an all-A student, but imaginative, bright and artistic.
