Southwest Energy Company SWN today released its 9th Annual Corporate Responsibility Report. The report highlights the company’s approach to environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) issues, which is an integral part of its corporate strategy.
“As one of the nation’s largest natural gas producers, Southwestern Energy is well positioned to help address the intertwined challenges of meeting national and global energy needs while supporting a lower-carbon future. Today marks our ninth annual Corporate Responsibility Report,” said Bill Way , President and Chief Executive Officer of Southwestern Energy.
“Our ESG approach, which is detailed in the report and informs all of our decisions, focuses on three key areas. First, we work responsibly to secure the role of natural gas in a lower-carbon future, including by reducing our own carbon emissions. Second, we strive to ensure a safe and inclusive workplace for employees and contractors and to have a positive impact on the communities in which we work and live. Finally, we strive to create sustainable value through proactive enterprise-wide risk management, accountability and transparency.”
Key reporting initiatives and highlights are as follows:

- Announced a new long-term goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity and absolute scope 1 emissions by 50% by 2035, in line with the path to net-zero emissions by 2050
- Compared to 2020, a 26% year-over-year reduction in methane intensity was achieved company-wide
- The routine flaring of associated natural gas has been eliminated
- Announced commitment to certify all wells as Responsibly Sourced Gas (RSG), achieved this quarter, and continued monitoring for potential emissions at all well sites
- In the sixth year, more fresh water was returned to the environment than was used in the company; SWN remains the first and only company in its industry to achieve and sustain freshwater neutral operations
