Three-year contract sets new standard for Teamster build contracts
TUKWILA, wash., October 21, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Approximately 75 drivers and mechanics at OMA Construction overwhelmingly ratified a new contract with Teamsters Local 174, solidifying one of the strongest Teamsters deals in the construction industry.
The new contract offers best-in-class wages, health care and pension benefits, as well as tough labor rules to protect workers’ rights in the workplace. The economic package reflects the current agreement between the Teamsters and the Associated General Contractors (AGC), which covers Teamsters from the construction industry at several other companies doing the same work.
The OMA construction agreement also includes superior sick leave language – setting the bar for the next round of AGC negotiations in much the same way OMA set the standard in the last contract – by giving workers access to the RWT XL Plus retirement sick leave plan, a Top priority for workers in industry.
“We are proud to once again deliver a strong contract to our members at OMA Construction,” said the Secretary and Treasurer of Local 174 Rick Hicks. “In recent years this company has risen from ‘redhead stepchild’ status to blue chip status within the construction industry and we believe the Teamsters have had a lot to do with this transformation. We also acknowledge OMA’s ownership in Barry O’Young and Brandon Akerswho are always ready and willing to negotiate in good faith and as a result we have been able to secure a strong deal that will strengthen this company and our members for future success in a challenging industry.”
OMA is relatively new to the Teamsters, having been non-union until voting to become Teamsters in 2016. This newly ratified contract marks the completion of their third successful contract negotiation process.
Teamsters Local 174 was founded in 1909 and represents 8,600 working men and women in Seattle and the surrounding areas. “Like” on Facebook under
