Steve Bannon, ex-president Donald Trump’s ex-adviser, was convicted four Months in federal prison along with a $6,500 fine Friday for criminal contempt of Congress after defying a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 riot.
During the hearing, Judge Carl Nichols denied Bannon’s request for credit for taking responsibility, which would have reduced his sentence.
During the first seven months of Trump’s tenure, he was chief White House strategist in the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Bannon declined to comment before the judge handed down his sentence, saying his attorneys spoke for him.
Nichols said if Bannon appeals in a timely manner, he will issue an order to stay the sentence pending the appeal.
In July, a federal jury found former Steve Bannon guilty of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the House Special Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack.
The jury returned a unanimous verdict on the two contempt charges in less than three hours.
- One for his refusal to testify in the investigation.
- Others for his failure to provide the documents requested by the committee.
Each charge carries a maximum term of imprisonment of one year.
Prosecutors have asked the judge to sentence Bannon to 6 months in prison and a $200,000 fine.
Bannon is also on trial in New York for allegedly defrauding donors as part of the We Build The Wall campaign.
