The US is reportedly discussing the possibility of submission Elon Musk’s ccompany to national security clearances.
What happened: US government and intelligence officials are considering the possibility of using tools to scrutinize Musk’s numerous ventures, and talks are still in the early stages, Bloomberg reportedciting people familiar with the matter.
Options under consideration include using the law that governs the Foreign Investment Committee to see whether Musk’s deals and operations pose national security risks, the report said.
Whether the CFIUS panel — which includes people from agencies like the State Department, Defense and Homeland Security — has the legal leeway to conduct a review is not yet clear, it added.
The CFIUS panel does not typically announce that a deal is under review and discussions are taking place behind closed doors, the report said.
Why it matters: Discussions about a possible review come amid Musk’s indication that he will stop funding the delivery Ukraine with his SpaceX-own company Starlink‘s satellite internet terminals. While I confirm that SpaceX has written a letter to Pentagon in terms of the same that Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO later said the company would Terminals continue to ship to Ukraine for free.
Musk was also embroiled in a fight over the purchase Twitter Inc. TWTR. The US government is reportedly unhappy that the billionaire is mobilizing funding from foreign high net worth individuals to complete the deal.
The Bloomberg report also noted that Musk had previously sued the US Air Force for obtaining rights to compete with a joint venture between them Lockheed Martin Corp. LMT and Boeing company B.A for arms contracts. Since then, the Pentagon several contracts outsourced Worth millions of dollars to SpaceX.
