
A The DC cannabis company is suing the city after it claims cops seized more than $700,000 in cash in 2021 raids. The owners are now demanding their money back.
What happened:
In August 2021, DC police conducted a raid Mr. Nice Guys DC, a popular Northwest cannabis store that Marijuana “free” to customers when purchasing another product. “Officers are seen climbing stairs and smashing into an ATM before confiscating cash and merchandise, making several arrests,” reported News4 Washington.
Gregory Wimsatt, co-owner of Mr. Nice Guys, said it was exhausting dealing with what he called an uphill battle. “It was nearly $800,000 in product and cash. What we specifically asked for in this case was just the cash. This does not include loss of damage to our products. We’ve had other situations where they actually banned us from our location.”
co-owner Damion West agreed: “Where is the justice? They come in, kick our door down, mug us, you know, they take our money,” he said said.
The company’s lawyers lately filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, arguing that “after investigations were completed and related criminal charges were withdrawn or dismissed, DC police failed to return the confiscated money.” The lawsuit seeks $750,000 in damages and attorneys’ fees.
“Our goal is for them to produce the information about the chain of custody of that money and just hand it back. It really is” said Karl Waltonthe company lawyer.
According to the lawsuit, police seized more than “$67,000 and vandalized two ATMs in the store while searching the Ninth Street location. A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Dept. (MPD) of DC said three people were arrested at the store and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
