intelligence Records released by the House Oversight Committee show the agency has since paid more than $1.4 million in Trump real estate donald trump took over the presidency.

What happened: The Trump Organization charged the Secret Service up to $1,185 a night for hotel rooms used by employees to protect Trump and his family, documents released Monday showed. reported The New York Times.

The $1.4 million figure is incomplete because it didn’t include payments to Trump’s foreign properties and because records stopped in September 2021, the committee said, according to the Times.

2019, Eric Trumpwho ran the Trump Organization while his father was in office, reportedly said the family business only charged “about $50” for hotel rooms during presidential visits.

Why it matters: Committee records show that Trump and his family used the Secret Service as “captive clients” for their business, visiting their properties hundreds of times and charging the government more than their usual spending limits, the Times noted.

Eric Trump said Monday that the Trump Organization “would have been significantly better off selling hospitality services to full-paying guests,” according to the report.

The Chairman of the Oversight Committee, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (DN.Y.) reportedly said the panel will continue the investigation and that this is “just the tip of the iceberg,” according to the Times.

Maloney said records obtained by the committee showed the Secret Service made at least 669 payments to Trump’s firm.

Last month, the New York Attorney General sued Trump, three of his adult children and the Trump Organization for $250 million decades of fraud.
