Self-proclaimed CIA whistleblower Edward Snowden, who was recently citizenship granted by Russia, took to Twitter on Saturday to warn of a far more serious threat than censorship.

“What bothers me more is not the censorship itself, but how it shapes people’s ideology,” Snowden tweeted. His comments came as he was citing an AFP story that was being debated state surveillance by the communist regime in China, lead by President Xi Jinping.

Although China’s communist leaders were authoritarian, the situation worsened after Xi took power in 2021, when he reined in the free-running turn-of-the-century social undercurrents with a combination of “technology, law and ideology” to pressure dissenters. says the AFP report.

Snowden’s comments made no sense to a Twitter user.

“Isn’t it similar to your friend in the Kremlin? He’s something of an iconic character and the censorship is the same. How come you are bothered by China but not by Russia?” said the user.
