OTTAWA, Oct. 12, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In detail open letter, Nearly a thousand health workers across Canada, signed by the Decent Work and Health Network and approved by the Health for All network, mandating all permanent residency status to save lives. The letter comes a few days before the end of ten months since Prime Minister Trudeau promised to create a regularization plan that would allow undocumented and temporary immigrants to stay permanently.
Ontario’s GP, Dr. Vanessa Redditt, one of the signatories, says: “Without secure immigration status, many migrants are denied basic rights and basic services, which is extremely detrimental to their health and well-being live and work in Canada and have precarious, temporary or no immigrant status to ensure permanent residency.
The letter, which was also signed by organizations including Canadian Doctors for Medicare, Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions, National Union of Public and General Employees, and the Health Coalitions of Manitoba, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, urges Prime Minister Trudeau to “put out the negative.” consider the health implications of precarious immigration status and ensure no one is left behind. Ensuring equal rights and access for all migrants is crucial to closing systemic gaps in health inequalities.”
Yasmin Beydoun, speech-language pathologist in Toronto, says: “I have had patients with significant swallowing disorders who left the hospital without community follow-up because they had no status and therefore no health insurance. This is a huge health risk if they cannot eat and drink safely, they are at greater risk of choking, lung infections and even malnutrition. These patients do not have the same access to medical care as citizens. Saving lives means ensuring permanent residency for all migrants, including undocumented migrants.”
