The majority of Americans don’t consider cannabis dangerous, a new one opinion poll uncovered by Rasmussen reports.
The poll asked 1,000 Americans about substance abuse and whether they think marijuana is dangerous or a gateway “to more dangerous drugs.” reported marijuana moment.
The central theses
- About 59% of respondents agree that substance abuse is generally “getting worse” in the US, compared to 9% who believe health problems are getting better.
- After all, 28% of respondents believe that cannabis is either not very dangerous or not dangerous at all – 29%.
- For 23% cannabis is “somewhat dangerous” and about 12% consider it “very dangerous”.
- Most Democrats (60%) said they didn’t think cannabis was dangerous compared to divided Republicanswith 48% believing it is at least somewhat dangerous and 45% believing it is not.
Importantly, 56% of those who believe drug abuse is becoming more serious in the US do not see cannabis as a cause or dangerous.
What about marijuana as a gateway drug? Respondents seemed to disagree on this, 46% think it’s either “very likely” or “fairly likely” that marijuana use “leads to the use of more dangerous drugs,” versus 46% who don’t think it’s likely.
The survey surveyed 1,000 American adults Sept. 14-15 with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
