April 14, 2010 – In the wake of the coal mine explosion that killed 29 workers in West Virginia, federal officials say that a computer error prevented the mine from receiving a warning about safety violations.
Joe Main, the director of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, said the error did not have an impact on the accident as prior to the explosion Massey Energy, the mine operator, made improvements that the computer would have warned about.
The computer program looks for patterns of violations in mines, but it failed to include eight citations and therefore didn’t flag the mine for a safety notification, Main said.
