Wayfinding is a term used to describe how the Hawaiian Islands were discovered. “By using the ancient art of Wayfinding, people from Micronesia sensed there was land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean”, says Nancy Oelklaus who is leading the support group movement for Wayfinding. She goes on to say, “In boats made from tree trunks, they set out to find this land using only signs from nature to navigate–winds, star patterns, behavior of animals at sea, and in the air.”
Now, through the power of Nancy Oelklaus’ Wayfinding groups, people are able find their life’s purpose.
In 2008 Dr. Oelklaus wrote a book about Wayfinding entitled Journey from Head to Heart: Living and Working Authentically. Dr. Oelklaus employs a metaphor of how the Hawaiian Islands were discovered through the ancient art of Wayfinding. She suggests that “People’s intuitive powers could be increased in the same way—by setting a goal and then paying attention to feedback from one’s surroundings.”
