Mike Pompeowho served as Secretary of State in the President Donald Trump’s Administration recently said he’s hiring his ducks for a shot at his former boss’s job in 2024.
What happened: Pompeo told a gathering of over 1,000 people at Chicago’s Navy Pier this week that he was putting together a team for a presidential election in 2024.
“We have a team in Iowa, a team in New Hampshire and South Carolina. And that’s not accidental. We’re doing the things you would do to get ready,” Pompeo said, according to Politico.
“I pray that in the end the American people will make a good decision about who their next leader will be.”
Pompeo threw a jab at Trump, saying, “I hope he enjoys his retirement.” The former secretary said he was “deeply grateful” to have been hired by the former US president.

Why it matters: Pompeo, a former CIA director, replaced Rex Tillerson as the 70th US Secretary of State between 2018 and 2021.
Pompeo has been a vocal critic of the Iran nuclear deal. He is also a supporter of National Security Agency and wanted to remove “legal and bureaucratic obstacles to surveillance,” according to a previous report.
A recent poll shows that Americans don’t want Trump or the President Joe Biden to run for the presidency in 2024.
Trump recently said he was three states ahead of Biden, citing a conservative poll he published on Truth Social.
Truth Social is owned by Trump media and technology group and is to go public through a merger Digital World Acquisition Corp. DWAC.
