
Seven Russian lawmakers who called for the President Wladimir Putin accused of treason over his decision to launch the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine were summoned by local police on Friday.
What happened: The politicians received summonses late in the evening of September 8 ordering them to come to the police station the next day to fill out reports on allegations of discrediting the Russian armed forces, sources said Radio-free Europea US government funded organization.
On Wednesday, Russian politicians from St. Petersburg’s Smolny district called for Putin’s impeachment after his war in Ukraine resulted in huge loss of life and economic difficulties in Russia.
They sent an official letter to the Russian Security Council and leaders of five political factions in the State Duma, who are demanding that federal lawmakers initiate the overthrow.
“The Smolninskoye District Council has decided to appeal to State Duma deputies with a proposal to charge President Putin with treason in order to remove him from office,” said the deputy Dmitry Palyuga indicated in the tweet with the document.
“The decision was supported by the majority of MPs present,” he added.
