Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine:
– ‘Tired of life’ –
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls for a halt to shelling of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhia, saying any attack on a nuclear power plant is “suicidal” without saying that both sides are responsible.
Moscow and Kyiv have blamed each other for strikes at the plant, which has been under Russian control since the early days of the February 24 invasion. The strikes of the last few days have damaged several buildings and forced a reactor to be shut down.
The United Nations nuclear regulator, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warned of “the very real risk of a nuclear catastrophe.”
Kyiv on Monday called for the establishment of a demilitarized zone around the train station.
– Referral Plan –
Moscow-backed authorities in southeast Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region say they are moving ahead with plans to hold a referendum on joining Russia.
“I signed a decree to start work on the issue of organizing a referendum on the reunification of the Zaporizhia region with the Russian Federation,” Yevgeny Balitsky, head of the Moscow-based administration in the occupied part of the region, said on social media .
The southern Ukrainian regions of Kherson and Zaporizhia have been largely under Russian control since the first weeks of the Moscow campaign.
Both are now being forcibly integrated into the Russian economy.
Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 after holding a referendum there.
– Kherson counter-offensive –
Ukrainian forces say they bombed a strategic bridge over the Dnipro River overnight in Kherson as they attempt to retake the city.
The Antonovskiy Bridge is the main land supply link between the city and the south bank of the Dnipro.
It was partially destroyed on July 27, forcing Russian forces to reconsider supply lines and possibly resort to pontoons to cross the water.
