War in Ukraine: Recent Developments

Here are the latest developments in the war in Ukraine:

– Ukraine is getting closer to exporting grain –

The Ukrainian Navy says work has resumed at three Black Sea ports designated under a deal with Russia to resume grain exports blocked by the Russian invasion.

During talks in Turkey last week, Kyiv and Moscow agreed on a mechanism that would allow blocked Ukrainian grain to be exported across the Black Sea from the ports of Odessa, Chernomorsk and Pivdennyi.

Kyiv has said it hopes to start shipping the first million tons of grain “this week” despite a Russian missile attack on the port of Odessa.

Russia and Ukraine are major agricultural exporters, but the invasion of Moscow has seriously disrupted Ukraine’s wheat exports as fighting damaged crops and blocked and mined ports.

As part of the agreement, a coordination center with Ukrainian and Russian representatives opened in Istanbul on Wednesday to oversee the safe passage of ships along the agreed routes.

– Ukraine hits a Russian-held bridge –

Ukrainian forces struck a key Russian-held bridge overnight during a counteroffensive to retake the occupied southern city of Kherson, officials from both sides say.

The Russian Army used the Antonivsky Bridge over the Dnipro River as a key supply route to Kherson, which fell to Russian forces in the early days of the invasion.

Kyiv has announced a major counter-offensive to retake the region adjacent to the Crimean peninsula using advanced Western missile systems.

– New Ukrainian Prosecutor Named –

Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Kostin will be appointed as the country’s new chief prosecutor, a week after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired Kostin’s predecessor and the head of the country’s security agency, citing widespread collusion with Russia among her staff.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said that 299 members of Ukraine’s parliament – the Rada – supported Kostin’s nomination.

Zelenskyy says he hopes Kostin will help achieve “fair punishment for every Russian war criminal.”

– EU court upholds ban on Russian news channel –

The European Court of Justice in Luxembourg confirms a ban on broadcasting for the Russian news channel RT France.

RT is constantly accused of spreading Russian state propaganda and has been blocked in most Western countries since President Vladimir Putin deployed troops to Ukraine in February.

The Kremlin has hit back by restricting some Western media outlets in Russia.

Russian lawmakers have also enacted draconian laws restricting freedom of expression, under which criticism of the war and occupation can lead to lengthy prison terms.

– Gazprom implements threatened cuts –

Russian energy giant Gazprom has kept its promise to slash gas supplies to Europe through the Nord Stream pipeline from 40 percent to about 20 percent of its capacity, German authorities say.

The Russian state-owned company announced Monday it would cut supplies to 33 million cubic meters per day – half the amount supplied since operations resumed last week after 10 days of maintenance.

EU states accuse Russia of suppressing supplies in retaliation for Western sanctions over the Moscow war in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov blames EU sanctions for the limited supply.
