Herman, Esq, comments: The mandatory pedestrian and cyclist awareness component of the pre-licensing course for driver’s license applicants in New York could not have come too soon. The number of cyclists has risen sharply due to the pandemic and there are more e-bikes, e-scooters, mopeds and other micro-mobility devices on our roads than ever before. Especially when delivery people are rushing in all directions, drivers need to keep a close eye on the road and the traffic around them.
Several times a week I personally observe very close conversations between cars, trucks, cyclists and pedestrians. Many motorists do not pay attention to cyclists when turning down side streets, whether turning left or right. Very often, the left-turning vehicles drive on dedicated bike lanes, but don’t check the mirrors to see if anyone is coming up the block. Hopefully, the new curriculum will make at least novice drivers more aware of pedestrians and cyclists.
