MANHATTAN, NY (New York Injury News) — Many details about the death of an e-bike rider who died after hitting a pole early Monday morning on 2nd Avenue near East 89th Street have not been released. However, we do know that the e-bike rider was on a dedicated southbound bike lane immediately prior to the accident.
Throttle controlled e-bikes can go 25 -30 miles per hour fast without the rider having to pedal. The speed limit for vehicles (as well as bicycles) on Second Avenue is only 25 miles per hour.
While we don’t yet know what caused this horrific accident, whether it was operator error, or if there was something (or someone) on the road that this e-bike rider was trying to avoid, wearing a proper bike helmet is so important and have a bell and lights on all bikes. E-Bikes are a great way to get around and a big help for delivery people. Operators of e-bikes as well as regular bicycles and operators of all micro-mobility devices such as e-scooters must take the right safety precautions to protect themselves.
