Rio Tinto, BHP Joint Venture Target of EU Antitrust Probe
January 27, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The proposed joint venture between Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, two of the largest mining companies in the world, has caught the attention of the European Commission, which has launched an antitrust investigation into the venture.
The venture, which would combine the companies’ iron-ore operations in Western Australia including mines, rail, ports and workforces, is being investigated as a restrictive business practice, despite the fact that the venture in question does not take place on European soil.
The proposed venture is the second attempt to combine ore operations in the West region. BHP also abandoned a hostile bid for Rio in 2008.
