What is the Key to Becoming More Creative at Work? Why is Time so Important? Tech Leaders Explain

Three digital thought leaders share their best practices for striking the proper balance between strategy and execution.

Dallas, TX, United States, 11/04/2021 / Dallas News Desk /

Global IT investment is expected to reach $4.5 trillion next year, a 5.5 percent rise from 2021. How can tech professionals find the appropriate mix between strategy and execution when companies demand more from their digital projects? Here are a few things you need to know.

Give Your Employees Room to Work on Creative Projects

Finding time to think about the future, according to Mia Sorgi, director of digital product and experience at PepsiCo Europe, isn’t always simple, and all digital professionals will recognize that they must achieve day-to-day operational objectives.

“There’s a certain amount of digital transformation stuff that’s almost hygiene and that you need to do. And sometimes that’s 60% or 80% of what you need to do,” she states.

However, despite these day-to-day challenges, digital leaders must also make room for innovation and even failure. While the prospect of failure is unsettling for employees, managers must find a method to consider how creative ideas may be implemented.

While huge tech businesses have made experimenting a crucial component of their working habits, Sorgi believes it can be more difficult for more conventional organizations with long-established working patterns. It is, however, an approach that all digital leaders must be ready to take.

Draw Up a Strategic Vision that You will Keep in Mind

Michael Cole, CTO of the European Tour and Ryder Cup, believes it is critical for digital leaders to provide clarity on both strategy and execution – something his team has worked hard to achieve.

“We set out our vision, which is very much around developing the connected and intelligent golf course of the future, and delivering what we refer to as ‘the tournament as a service’. But we recognize that we have tactical things to address as well. What’s really important is we ensure that whatever we do tactically is actually evolving us towards the vision.”

Cole’s goal for connected golf courses is to use a variety of technologies, including cloud, 5G, sensors, and big data, to revolutionize how the sport is played, viewed, and supplied to diverse locations across the world. To realize that goal, he relies on three pillars: data and connection, analytics and insight, and fan interaction and immersion.

Cole understands that his squad may be sidetracked from time to time, but those new problems will not deter the team from its ultimate goal.

Make Time to Consider the Future

According to Cynthia Stoddard, CIO of Adobe, the key to reconciling strategy with execution is to allow oneself time to think about the future. She claims that there is no secret formula for determining how much time should be spent on crystal ball gazing because CIO priorities should shift in response to organizational needs.

“When I’m working on roadmaps with my teams, I will be spending more time on strategy and thinking about the future,” she says. “And when we get the roadmap set, and click it over into execution mode, then it’s all about interlocking and project meetings and communication with the business.”

According to Stoddard, a good balance of strategy and execution is dependent on the stage of the business cycle. And she claims that cycle occurs over a considerable time horizon — generally three years, but occasionally up to five depending on the nature of the invention under consideration. She then collaborates with her team to plan out how her approach will be implemented.

Stoddard also says she keeps in touch with other CIOs to keep up with what’s going on and what they’re working on. She meets with analysts to grasp what they’re hearing, and she interacts with venture investors to find out what’s next.

“Because there could be some interesting startup that has some great technology. And it might not be in our vision yet, but if we experiment and play with it, we could inject it in. And it could be something that turns out to be a really awesome solution in about a year.”
