Is America is on the Doorstep of Key Nuclear Fusion Goal

Dallas, TX, United States, 09/04/2021 / News Bureau /

A nuclear fusion research institution in the United States is on the verge of realizing a long-held aim. The National Ignition Facility heats and compresses hydrogen fuel to initiate fusion using a strong laser.

According to an experiment, the aim of “ignition”, where the energy released by fusion exceeds the energy given by the laser, is now within reach. The mechanism that powers the Sun, fusion, might be harnessed to provide an endless, clean energy source.

One hundred ninety-two beams from NIF’s laser – the world’s highest-energy example – are directed onto a peppercorn-sized capsule containing deuterium and tritium, two different types of hydrogen, in a process known as inertial confinement fusion. This compresses the fuel to a density of 100 times that of lead and heats it to a temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius, hotter than the Sun’s core. Thermonuclear fusion is aided by these conditions.

On August 8, an experiment provided 1.35 megajoules (MJ) of energy or roughly 70% of the laser energy given to the fuel capsule. To achieve ignition, the fusion yield must be larger than the laser’s 1.9 MJ input.

Debbie Callahan, a physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which hosts NIF, told BBC News, “This is a major advance for fusion and the entire fusion community.”

The yield from this month’s evaluation is eight times NIF’s previous record, set in Spring 2021, and 25 times the yield from earlier experiments conducted in 2018.

Prof Chittenden says that a high yield requires self-sustaining burn. The burn wave has to propagate into the high-density fuel to get a large amount of fusion energy out. The MJ of energy released in the experiment is amazing in fusion terms, but this is similar to the energy necessary to boil a kettle.

He continued by saying we can obtain far higher fusion energy through ignition if we can figure out how to keep the fuel together for longer, allowing more of it to burn. For inertial confinement fusion, this will be the next frontier.

Scientists at the NIF think they have now achieved “burning plasma,” in which the fusion events produce the heat for more fusion. This is critical for the process to be self-sustaining.

Existing nuclear energy is based on the fission process, in which a heavy chemical element is broken into lighter ones. Fusion is a process that involves combining two light elements to create a heavier one.

The National Ignition Facility was built starting in 1997 and finished in 2009. In October 2010, the first experiments to test the laser’s power began

The other function of the NIF is to ensure the safety and reliability of America’s nuclear arsenal. At times, scientists who wish to use the massive laser for fusion have had their time-limited by national security experiments.

However, the BBC reported in 2013 that during NIF experiments, the amount of energy released by fusion exceeded the amount of energy absorbed by the fuel, marking a breakthrough and a first for any fusion facility in the world. The findings of these tests were later published in Nature.

NIF is one of several initiatives around the world aimed at improving fusion research. They include the multibillion-euro Iter complex in Cadarache, France, which is now under construction.

Iter’s approach to laser-driven fusion at NIF will be different; the facility in southern France will use magnetic fields to hold hot plasma, electrically charged gas. Magnetic confinement fusion is the name for this concept (MCF).

However, constructing economically viable fusion facilities capable of supplying electricity to the grid will necessitate still another great leap.
