Indiana – Public health officials in Indiana say an outbreak of HIV in the southeastern part of the state has reached over 100 cases. Officials said Friday that as of Thursday, there were 95 confirmed cases and 11 preliminary cases in Scott County according to a Reuters report. The outbreak, linked to intravenous prescription drug abuse, has been deemed the largest in the history of Indiana. In an effort to fight the outbreak, a short-term needle exchange has been authorized by the state. Governor Mike Pence approved the program through April 25, but an extension may be granted if needed following the expiration date. As noted by the AP, with needle exchange programs, drug users are provided sterile needles in an effort to reduce instances of infections spreading by shared needles that may be contaminated.
