In the aftermath of the killing of a Tamil political prisoner in Sri Lanka, Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE)* today reiterated the importance of creating an International Protection Mechanism IPM) to protect Tamils in that island.
Last week, a number of Tamil political prisoners were attacked by the security forces in a prison in Vavunia and a prisoner named Nimal Rupan was killed. There are several other Tamil political prisoners in serious condition as a result of this attack.
“Tamils are not safe even in Prisons in Sri Lanka,” said Deluxon Morris, Minister for Ministry of Investigation of Genocide, Crimes against Humanity and War Crimes of TGTE.
“We are calling for the creation of International Protection Mechanism to protect Tamils. This is the only way Tamil’s safety can be guaranteed in that island”, continued Deluxan Morris.
“We have reached out to different governments and international organizations as soon as we received reliable information about the attack, but we could not able to prevent the loss of life. We are urging the UN to pressure Sri Lanka to allow international monitors to visit Tamil political prisoners to assess their welfare” said Deluxon Morris.
Sri Lankan Government has repeatedly killed Tamil political prisoners since 1983. In 1983, fifty two Tamil political prisoners, including Kuttimani, Tangathurai, Jegan and Dr. Rajasundaram were killed. Dr. Rajasundaram was a leading pacifist and the Secretary General of the Gandian movement in Sri Lanka. No one was held accountable for these killings in 1983.
Since the killing of political prisoners in 1983, Sri Lankan Government have routinely rounded up Tamils and detained them without charge or trial. Several of these prisoners either disappeared or killed by the government. Facing arrest became a routine for Tamils in that island.
The situation got worse since the end of the war in 2009, when thousands of Tamils were detained in secret prisons. Repeated requests to at-least release the names of those detained were rejected by the Sri Lankan Government. This left thousands of families in limbo without knowing whether their loved once are dead or alive.
There are serious concerns that many may have been killed. There are also reports that some Tamil women political prisoners are kept as sex slaves by the Sri Lankan security forces.
