Race Founder and former World Series of Poker Director Steve Morrow has announced the 5th and final 50 mile Race For The Rainforest. The race set for November 6, 2011, in conjunction with World Run Day, the International Day of Charity.

The formerly annual event was last run in 2004. The 2005 edition was postponed and then cancelled in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Subsequent attempts to resume the race were unsuccessful.

In recent years the future of the race became clouded by race founder Steve Morrow’s grudging acceptance of the current research disputing Ken Cooper’s “theory” of aerobics. It is now known that distance running provides few if any health benefits but many serious health risks.

In light of the current research, Morrow will not allow any other runners to register for the race, it will be a solo effort. And in contrast to previous races, which followed training runs of up to 32 miles, this effort will involve training runs never exceeding 2 miles, the longest distance Morrow still considers to have health benefits outweighing the risks.

The Race for the Rainforest has never accepted advertising, direct donations from sponsors or entry fees from participants. All costs of the race have been borne by Race Founder Steve Morrow. Race sponsors have donated directly to worthy charities and in return received prominent display on the race website.

The primary beneficiary for the final 50 mile Race For The Rainforest is Sweet Home New Orleans, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and preserving the musical culture of New Orleans. Morrow states that with 64 inches of annual rainfall, New Orleans passes his test as a legitimate rainforest.

Morrow also welcomes sponsorship for donations to any legitimate organization dedicated to preserving other rainforests, any legitimate charity helping tornado-ravaged communities in Alabama, Missouri, Nebraska, or elsewhere, or any of the many areas worldwide still suffering from natural or man-made disasters.

The initial sponsors of the final 50 mile Race for the Rainforest are the Health Tracking Network, an organization dedicated to tracking and identifying causes of common illnesses worldwide; NOLA Merchant Services, LLC, a New Orleans marketing firm that offers complimentary Local Internet Marketing SEO (Search Engine Optimization); and Bayou Herbs, an independent affiliate for a US manufacturer of nutritional supplements whose products boast published human clinical trial research regarding their effects on heart health and cancer.

Sponsors are allowed up to five 80-character lines of text including a hyperlink to their G-rated website on the “Thank You” page of the click-to-donate website, and receive 20,000 impressions for each $20 donation to worthy charities. We require that charities other than our designated beneficiary be submitted for approval prior to sponsorship acceptance.

Current traffic volume is approximately 11,000 unique visitors per month as determined by eXTReMe Tracking, and can be verified at any time by any visitor to the site.
