Hip Hop Trio Collaborates with Murdercap Records Producer SlikkForDays.
For Immediate Release
Lynchburg, VA–December 2, 2010–Virginia Hip Hop up-and-comers VGM are preparing to explode on the global scene with their new full-length self-titled album. The Lynchburg trio [fronted by Gigi (Felicia Overstreet), Moose (Jerry Culmer), and Da Come Up Kid (Marquis Johnson)] brings it hard and heavy, with smooth R&B vocals offset by murderous Hip Hop lyrics.
Although the crew are barely out of their teens, they list as their idols a veritable Who’s Who of REAL Hip Hop–Rakim, AZ, DJ Premiere, 2Pac, Biggie, KRS-One, and Jay-Z. As the 21-year-old 6′ 4″ Da Come Up Kid puts it, “I really don’t listen to anything after 2000 except Jay-Z. The current Hip Hop acts just don’t bring it, and we just ain’t feeling it.”
The crew have been into music since they were children. All were reared on the sounds of their Baptist churches, which gave them the grounding to learn their craft from the best. Gigi is a 5′ 4″ 20-year-old hazel-eyed blonde, whose voice recalls soul legends Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, and Gladys Knight, all coated in Mary J. Blige. She lists her present-day influences as Kelly Clarkson, Britt Nicole, Carrie Underwood, family, and friends. Audience shock at the harshness of the rest of the crew doesn’t last past the first note of the rich soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics that Gigi drops.
The final member of the dynamic trio is 21-year-old Moose, a Philly native raised on the sounds of the Wu Tang Clan, Jay-Z, Biggie, Big L, and LL Cool J, whose goals in the industry are simple but bold. Moose wants to put in the work to be the best musician and producer in the game, take over the fashion industry, and look out for his Grandma with a new crib. Moose sees the industry as having lost its way: “Hip Hop used to be raw, unfiltered, and relevant. Now it is too stale, too slow, and there’s not enough VGM!”
VGM will drop its new album and videos in January 2011, and have brought in Murdercap Records CEO Jerome “SlikkForDays” Almon to collaborate on some of their new material. The tracks promise to be explosive, as Virginia’s best comes together with the Motor City’s best- The Virus and Gitty Gutta for The 2011.
Commercials, ads, and music videos from VGM are scheduled for release on MTV, VH1, XXL, BET, and all the major Hip Hop power-house internet sites like AllHipHop.com to coincide with the album’s release in January. Fans can get a preview of what promises to be one of the hottest records of 2011 on ReverbNation and through VGM’s very own website, slated to launch in January as well.
