EINNEWS—November 12—Invasive species are threatening the freshwater fish of the Mediterranean, a large-scale study reports.
The study was conducted by the Forest Technology Centre of Catalonia, Spain and published in the journal Diversity and Distributions.
Manmade factors are weakening local stocks, contributing to the growth of invasive species, according to the report. The study tracked 232 fish species and their habitat patterns.
Pressures documented include the over-exploitation of the various seafood resources, pollution, reservoirs and rechanneling of water sources.
This report comes days after release of investigations into the wide scale decimation of bluefin tuna stocks in the North Atlantic, much of it illegally conducted by ship operators receiving EU subsidies.
