European Commission Gives Nod to Cloned Food

Oct. 28, 2010 /EIN Presswire/ – The U.K. currently prohibits the sale of food from the offspring of clones, but that could change due to a European Commission report approving the right of member states to sell cloned offspring into the food chain.

The Commission said that since food from the offspring of clones “cannot be distinguished from other animals, a clone traceability system will be needed,” but that a ban on sales cannot be justified by current evidence.

Under the Commission’s proposals all farmers in the U.K. would be able to buy reproductive material from clones outside the E.U. and sell their products into the food chain.
