The day was established by Pope Francis in 2016 at the end of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to honor the poor.

The day celebrated on Nov 13, will be the 6th celebration of the day. This day was established by Pope Francis in 2016 at the end of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in honor of the poor.
In his message this year, Pope Francis stated: “World Day of the Poor comes this year as a healthy challenge, helping us to reflect on our lifestyles and the many forms of poverty around us.” He recalled the economic challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic and now caused by the Russian invasion Ukraine.
Nearly 30,000 Salesian priests, brothers, sisters and novices work in more than 130 countries around the world to provide education, human development and social programs to poor youth and their families.
