OAKVILLE, Ont. and CHARLOTTE, NC and LONDON, Nov. 07, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Terrestrial Energy, an advanced nuclear technology development company, and TerraPraxis, an organization that designs, develops and accelerates scalable, equitable climate solutions signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to collaborate on coal repowering. Developed by TerraPraxis, Repowering Coal is a program to standardize and systematize the replacement of coal stoves in existing coal-fired power plants with high-temperature heat delivered by Generation IV core technology.
That Repowering Coal Reportwritten by TerraPraxis, was presented at COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021. In partnership with Microsoft, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bryden Wood, Schneider Electric and others, Repowering Coal is a program aimed at integrating clean heat sources into existing coal-fired power plants.
TerraPraxis selected Terrestrial Energy’s Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) as the first heat source supplier for its coal repowering program because of its unique capabilities. These include the high-temperature heat supply needed to replace coal boilers and its capacity, which can be deployed quickly and at the scale needed to replace 2 terawatts of global coal capacity by 2050. Under the terms of the agreement, Terrestrial Energy and TerraPraxis will operate on a standardized system interface between IMSR and coal-fired power plant systems that…
