The first batch of drivers in Texas votes unanimously to organize
HOUSTON, October 31, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Drivers at Aramark Uniform Services in Houston have voted unanimously to join Teamsters Local 988. They are the first group of drivers in the company to unionize altogether State of Texas.
“We look forward to negotiating a solid contract for these workers who have stood up and stayed united in the face of heinous anti-union action by the company,” he said Robert MelePresident of Local 988. “I want to thank Teamster General President Sean M. O’Brien and all at the International Union who helped make this victory possible.”
The organizing victory is only the latest triumph in the South as unions expand their presence in right-to-work states despite what is often seen as a hostile environment for organized labor.
Markus Caver is a driver who played a key role in the union’s organizing committee.
“It’s a long time coming,” Caver said. “We lost a lot of money from our paychecks due to management’s bad business decisions and when they found out we were unionizing they did everything in their power to stop us. Aramark has treated its workers with disrespect and humiliation for too long, but that will soon be over.”
